Change the inside before the outside

You can't fix communication with a few theory lessons.

That's not my line — it's something a client said to me at the end of our six-session coaching program, reflecting on what actually changed for him.

His point: technique alone doesn't transform how someone communicates.

What shifts things is a change in mindset, perspective, and confidence — and better communication follows from that, almost automatically.

Most communication training focuses on the mechanics:

  • Use this framework.
  • Breathe this way.
  • Avoid these hedging words.
  • Practise these tongue twisters.
  • Land the ending.

Useful, but secondary.

If the underlying belief — "I might sound stupid", or "They'll misjudge me", or "I don't really know this well enough" — doesn't shift first, the technique has nothing to stand on.

His conclusion was profound: change the inside - before the outside.

(If this resonates, I'd love to hear about it.)
